Malcolm Gladwell is the author of a fascinating book entitled, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. In it Gladwell states, "Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread like viruses do." He goes on to say that what many of the things that make a significant difference actually had small beginnings. Well the Bible teaches that God often likes to use little things, little people and little places to do great things and in this week’s message Pastor Ray will talk about how God can use us no matter how big or small we are in spite of what we are often lead to believe.
Christopher Wright in All Our Gods Have Failed writes, "The worst thing about idols, as the Hebrew scriptures so tirelessly point out, is that they are utterly useless when you need them most." If your faith is in an object that is lifeless, it is pointless. But when placed in the living God the road of Faith leads to the work of God in your life. In this week's message Pastor Ray will be teaching on the journey of Faith that works.
Socrates was wont to say-"They are most happy and nearest the gods that needed nothing." And coming once up into the Exchange at Athens, where they that traded asked him, "What will you buy; what do you lack?" After he had gravely walked up into the middle, spreading forth his hands and turning about, "good gods," saith he, "who would have thought there were so many things in the world which I do not want!" While we only follow The God and not gods as Socrates did, his point is powerful... satisfaction cannot be found in the things that we can possess. Some years ago, a 14-foot bronze crucifix was stolen from Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. It had stood at the entrance to that cemetery for more than 50 years. The cross was put there in 1930 by a Catholic bishop and had been valued at the time at $10,000. The thieves apparently cut it off at its base and hauled it off in a pick-up. Police speculate that they cut it into small pieces and sold it for scrap. The thieves figured that the 900-pound cross probably brought about $450. They obviously didn't realize the value of that cross. In some respects, many today have misunderstood the value of the Cross of Christ. When life is going well for us it is easy to become spiritually distant and lazy. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley did an experiment some time ago that involved introducing an amoeba into a perfectly stress-free environment: ideal temperature, optimal concentration of moisture, constant food supply. The amoeba had an environment to which it had to make no adjustment whatsoever. So you would guess this was one happy little amoeba. Whatever it is that gives amoebas ulcers and high blood pressure was gone. Yet, oddly enough, it died. Likewise we must be careful in times of ease not to become spiritually lazy but to use those times as to deepen our relationship with God. In the Bible names were more often than not, given to communicate a message or to represent an idea and sometimes to shape a life. In this week’s message Pastor Ray begins a new series entitled Power in the Name. Each message will focus on the significance of the names of Jesus and the names of God. Did you know that the name of Jesus is the most exalted name of all the names? In Part 1, Pastor Ray will show just what the name of Jesus expresses and what that means to you.
The perception or use of the name of Jesus to incite violence is both a misunderstanding and a misuse of His name.
