5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR SPIRITUAL HEARING…Pt. 1
There has probably never been a time in history where technology and sociology have created so many different opinions, perspectives and “voices” that tug at our hearts and minds. Social media has created a kind of “every voice is authoritative” with equally valid convictions. Much of the news media has moved away from being voices of unbiased reporting to voices of agenda driven promotion. And the voice of many churches has become spiritually compromised with culturally acceptable messages. On top of these, add modern advertising, politically correct academic institutions and the voices of popular television programs all laden with cultural messages designed to influence and advance a specific moral and philosophical ideology.
With so many voices in our lives, it can be difficult to hear the most important voice of all—God’s! I have been asked many times through the years, “How can I learn to distinguish and hear the voice of God?” It is a question that every believer should know the answer to and it is an essential if you are going to walk in His will.
Before I give you some insight on the matter, let me also give you a couple of foundational truths. First, God desires to communicate with you. If you are not recognizing His voice or hearing Him speak, the problem is not on His end. Second, the voice of God will always be consistent with scripture. He will never speak into your heart a word that is contrary to the teaching of the Bible. And with that in mind, here are a few principles to improve your spiritual hearing:
- Get Clean… the scripture says in Isaiah 59:2 “but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.” If our sin would prevent God from hearing us, it stands to reason that it would also prevent us from hearing Him.
Since our sin affects our communication with God, and if you want to hear from God, you must deal with the barriers and sin that cause God to hide His face. Confess, repent and forsake is the path that restores our spiritual hearing.
- Get in God’s Word… The Psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) There is absolutely no substitute for time in God’s Word if you really desire to hear His voice.
God’s written Word is divinely inspired and often the specific means by which He speaks to your heart. That is why you need to take in large quantities of it. When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, it was the Word of God that provided Him with the direction of God as He confronted the enemy of God. Nothing has changed. His Word is just that, it’s His Word to you for direction. And it is the Spirit of God in you that causes the Word of God to speak to you.
I’ll share more next week about how you can improve your spiritual hearing… but don’t wait till then to work on it… take these two principles and put them in motion in your life and start listening
One of the reasons that God speaks to us is because He is always trying to take us someplace new… and He wants you to know where that place is! I love being your Pastor!
