A Lesson From Normandy… Keep Moving!

01.03.16 | by Ray Jones

On June 6, 1944 combined forces of more than 140,000 soldiers, with the US making up over half of that number, invaded the beaches of Normandy France in an all out assault on the Germans. It is known as “D-day” and is considered one of the greatest battles ever fought. Prior to the assault day, landing troops were given a number of specific instructions about how to make the invasion successful. One of those lessons was, when you hit the beaches, don’t stay in one place, KEEP MOVING! In fact they were told that there are only two kinds of soldiers that remain on the beach, dead ones and ones that would soon be dead. Forward movement was essential no only to surviving, but to success in the battle and completing the mission.

In fact, General George S. Patton in what has come to be known as his “The Speech” delivered 2 days before the D-day invasion told his third army, “When a man is lying in a shell hole, if he just stays there all day, [the enemy] will get him eventually…My men don't dig foxholes. Foxholes only slow up an offensive. Keep moving.”

Paul said something similar in Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

As you enter a New Year let the truth of Paul’s words and the lesson from Normandy reinvigorate your spiritual life—KEEP MOVING! Now is not the time to lie down, slow down or become complacent. The enemy of your soul will not lie down or give up in 2016 so don’t give him an advantage. The devil loves it when you simply stay in a foxhole. Instead, begin this year with a new dedication and new determination for your commander and chief, Jesus Christ. Keep moving forward in your spiritual quest to know Him and especially in your personal spiritual growth.

Let me give you several ways that will keep you moving forward spiritually in 2016…

    1. Pray more… spend more time in serious conversations with Christ this year.
    2. Listen more… be faithful to read God’s Word and listen as you do—He’ll speak!
    3. Serve more… elevate service to Christ above everything else that you give energy to… to grow up, you may have things that you must give up.
    4. Attend more… yes, church is important in the development of your relationship with Christ! Make it a priority. Don’t let the enemy fool you make it a priority.

Speaking of lessons… our annual book study begins tonight at 6:00 PM—Running on Empty. Don’t miss it. Remember, God is always trying to take you FORWARD! I love being your Pastor.

    For God’s Glory Alone,
