Fighting Rubber Soldiers…

01.10.16 | by Ray Jones

Last week I gave you a lesson from D-Day and the battle of Normandy—Keep Moving. Let me give you another that will help you have a successful year. Again, it comes from the battle strategy used at Normandy.

Prior to the invasion by allied troops onto the beaches of Normandy, Operation Fortitude was set in motion. It was an elaborate hoax that used rubber tanks, canvas ship, plywood decoy aircraft and Rubber soldiers. All were used to distract the Germans from the real landing location of allied forces on D-Day. It used multiple layers of trickery. The most striking was the creation of two phantom armies – one in Scotland to threaten an invasion of Norway, and the other in southeast England to threaten Pas-de-Calais.

A team of camofleurs and theatre set designers was brought on to mock up an entire fake army on the coast around Dover, the closest point to Calais. They created what was basically a rubber army. In an ingenious move, the camofleurs established the imaginary First U.S. Army Group, headed by a real blood-and-guts general, Lieutenant General George S. Patton. His selection as head of the fake army was a stroke of genius, because the Germans believed he would play a major role in the invasion.

Among the fake army were hundreds of rubber soldiers dropped as paratroopers over Calais complete with small firecracker devices that exploded all the way to the group giving the Germans the impression that the paratroopers were real and were firing at them from the sky as they descended. This ghost army succeeded at distracting the Germans, causing them to fight an enemy that was not real. Historians tell us that this distraction was enough to ultimately help secure a victory at Normandy.

Here is the lesson for you to be successful in 2016… Make Sure You Are Fighting the Right Fight. There are so many things that the devil will use to distract you from the things that really matter. So much energy is lost over things that have no eternal significance. So let me give you a few principles to keep you focused on the right fight.

    1. Stay Close to God…Draw near to God and He’ll draw near to you.” (James 4:8) You are not always able to recognize the enemy, but God is, and He is able to clarify the battle.
    1. Walk in the Spirit… …walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.(Galatians 5:16) Operate under the leadership of the Holy Spirit and you’ll not miss a step.
    1. Renew Your Mind… “…be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God...(Romans 12:2) Your mind can become a confusing battlefield unless it is renewed by God. So surrender your thoughts to His Word and you’ll know His Will.

These 3 simple biblical principles will keep you from fighting “rubber” soldiers in 2016 and enable victory in the things that matter most. Remember, God is always trying to take you someplace new. I love being your Pastor!
