Life In The Spirit … The “Insider”

Life In The Spirit … The “Insider”

Most people have heard the name Muhammad Ali. Some consider him to be the greatest heavy weight boxer of all time. But the name behind Ali is probably not as well known… Angelo Dundee. In his book If, Mark Batterson writes, “For more than two decades, Angelo Dundee was in Muhammad Ali's corner, literally. He was Ali's cornerman! He's the one who made Ali float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. He also trained fifteen other world boxing champions. Angelo Dundee described his job as a cornerman this way: ‘When you're working with a fighter, you're a surgeon, an engineer, and a psychologist.’”

It is not unusual to have people around us say things like, “I’m in your corner” or “I’ve got your back” to encourage us that we have a friend ready to help us out. But the Bible tells us that as Christians we have something even better than a cornerman or someone that’s “got our back.” We have the Holy Spirit. He isn’t just around us; He’s in us! And that is the difference maker. Jesus said in John 16:7, “…I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”  And in John 14:17 Jesus said, “…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for He DWELLS with you and will be IN YOU.”

The indwelling Spirit of God is the power source for living. But that power must be yielded to. The fact that the Spirit of God is resident in the life of a believer does not necessarily mean that the Spirit of God is president of a believer’s life. That is why so many Christian live powerless and defeated lives. God has given us the Spirit in order to give us the power to live in victory, to face adversity and to become Holy expressions of His nature. If you want this Spirit Life and it’s accompany power you must move beyond the Spirit simply residing in your life to allowing Him to preside over your life.

    Here is how that happens:

    1. Confess sin and get clean… the greatest barrier to your fellowship and the Spirit’s power in your life is unconfessed and undealt with sin. If you want power, get clean by confessing your sin to God…Pray and ask God to examine your heart and reveal every sin, then confess each to Him. (Some may require that you get something right with someone else as well). 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
    2. Surrender … surrendering our agendas, our plans and our very lives enables Christ to rebuild, renew, restore and refresh us. Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
    3. Make Christ Lord… We must willingly enthrone Him as Lord over our lives. That means you must choose to let Him rule over your life. The Holy Spirit will not force Himself on you. Bertha Smith said, “If He sees that we are clean, and that he is in complete possession of us, then he will fill us just as he filled the tabernacle and the temple when they were dedicated to Him” So, invite Him to be to you, who He already is—Lord!

The Holy Spirit is God’s “Insider” for every believer… so be filled with the Spirit!

And remember, God is always trying to take you someplace new. I love being your Pastor!!
