The Silent Secret to Powerful Praying…

In my library, I have several books by the 20th century Norwegian Pastor Ole Hallesby. And when it comes to prayer, Hallesby used an illustration in which he likens prayer to mining as he knew it in Norway. Demolition to create mine shafts took two basic kinds of actions. There are long periods of time, he writes, "when the deep holes are being bored with great effort into the hard rock." To bore the holes deeply enough into the most strategic spots for removing the main body of rock was work that took patience, steadiness, and a great deal of skill. Once the holes were finished, however, the "shot" was inserted and connected to a fuse. "To light the fuse and fire the shot is not only easy but also very interesting ... One sees 'results.' … Shots resound, and pieces fly in every direction."

But he concludes that "anyone can light a fuse." The explosive result you see is really the byproduct of the more painstaking work that first took place through the patient persistence of drilling strategic holes in the solid rock.

Such is the secret to powerful prayers. In Luke 18:1 it says, “He then told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not become discouraged…”

Other than faith, perhaps nothing is more necessary in prayer than persistence. For many, the lack of prayer power is not that they do not believe in prayer, or even practice prayer. It is that they do not persist in prayer and so they rarely see God answer prayers. In today’s message, I will continue our series on a Favored Faith by sharing with you about the connection between God’s favor in our life and prayer.

Speaking of Prayer… Be Sure to Visit our New Prayer War Room—it is located through the double doors off the front left side of the platform in our Worship Center. It is outstanding and will be central to a host of small prayer matters. Our ushers provided the resources to refurbish the room, several of our men volunteered their skill to do the work, and our prayer team provided the plans and directions for its new use. It will be open all day, so check it out between services.

Enlistment today… in light of our new War Room, we will begin today reenlisting individuals to serve on our Worship prayer teams. Those are teams we began when I came here 16 years ago for the purpose of praying during the worship time, for the worship service going on at that time. They have served quietly and faithfully for all these years. But it’s time for us to reenlist and enlist some new and additional prayer team members. Will you enlist today as a Worship prayer soldier? It will only require a couple of Sundays a year for you to do your duty. We will provide training (very simple) for you and all who enlist at a later date. I covet your help in this spiritual war for the souls of all those who come our way and those who worship with us. Thanks in advance for enlisting and helping us move the battle forward to victory.

1Prayer Tonight… on a final note about prayer, tonight rather than gather here at RBC, we will join with churches from all over the wiregrass at the Dothan Civic Center at 6:00 PM for a community-wide prayer effort in preparation for the Will Graham Celebration coming in May. Join us in united prayer for our entire area. I’ll see you at six at the Civic Center.

And don’t forget, God is always trying to take you someplace new. I love being your pastor!!!!

    For God’s Glory Alone,

    Bro. Ray
