The Value of Sacrifice….
God loves sacrifice! The Bible is full of stories of sacrifice like Abraham and Isaac, the Rich Young ruler who refused to sacrifice, Daniel, Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego who were willing to sacrifice their careers and certainly the sacrifice of our Savior. But one of my favorite stories of sacrifice is found in Mark and Luke and it’s about a poor widow who captured the attention of Jesus. Mark’s account goes like this:
“And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”” (Mark 12:41–44, ESV)
Jesus used this wonderful story as an object lesson for His disciples and certainly for us today. The lesson is all about the value of sacrifice to God. All gifts, especially gifts of obedience are honorable and useful to God. But gifts of sacrifice that go beyond simple obedient faith, are not just honorable to God, they are Valuable to God. And the lesson from Jesus was this…
- It represents our Dedication to God… sacrificial giving reveals how committed we are to advancing the Kingdom of God. The poor woman gave all she had to be in partnership with God and the Kingdom work.
- It represents our Devotion to God… sacrificial giving is more than just our commitment, it reveals our love for God. And Jesus said that loving God is the greatest commandment.
“Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” (Mark 12:29–30, ESV)
- It represents our Dependence on God…sacrificial giving expresses our trust and belief that God takes care of His own. The woman gave all she had because she trusted that God would supply all she needed.
I shared some of these thoughts with our staff this week and ask them a question that I ask you…Are there any sacrifices that you need to make that demonstrate your love and loyalty to Jesus?
Happy Mother’s Day… Speaking of sacrifice, no one does it better than moms! No PM services tonight, instead spend the evening with family as you continue honoring your mom.
Foundations… Is a special short-term interactive message series that I will begin with our entire congregation beginning next Sunday evening in our worship time. It is a course on what we believe and the purpose of God for our lives. I am excited to share it with you and I want to encourage every member and interested member to join us for this special series. A free guidebook will be provided to each person that attends.
I love being your Pastor and remember,
