Don’t Stand Still… Grow On!

C. E. Macartney said, “Between an airplane and every other form of locomotion and transportation there is one great contrast. The horse and wagon, the automobile, the bicycle, the locomotive, the speedboat, and the great battleship—all can come to a standstill without danger, and they can all reverse their engines, or their power, and go back. But there is no reverse about the engine of an airplane. It cannot back up. It dare not stand still. If it loses its momentum and forward-drives, then it crashes. The only safety for the airplane is in its forward and upward motion. The only safe direction for the Christian to take is forward and upward. If he stops, or if he begins to slip and go backward, that moment he is in danger.”

Don’t Stand Still… Grow On!

  1. E. Macartney said, “Between an airplane and every other form of locomotion and transportation there is one great contrast. Pablo Casals was considered the greatest cellist to ever live. When he was 95 years old, he was asked why he continued to practice 6 hours a day. He answered, “Because I think I’m making progress.”

When it comes to spiritual growth, spiritual maturity and going deep with God, are you making any progress? Are you going forward? Do you want to go deeper? Do you want to be different than you are? Like Moses, do you cry out, “Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sightPlease show me your glory.” (Exodus 33:13,18)

So how do you get there? It starts with desire. Moses longed for a deeper relationship with God. Have you asked God to show Himself to you? Maybe you need to begin with a simple prayer that says, “Lord, just give me the desire to desire you.” And then practice the presence of God, start seeing everything in your life from a spiritual point of view.

  • Guard your mouth! Stop using your tongue as an instrument of unrighteousness. Stop devouring others with words of criticism and gossip. Rather, practice Ephesians 4:29 that says, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
  • Guard your eyes! Stop ungodly images from flowing through your eyes and programming your mind. Matthew 6:22–23 says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
  • Guard your ears! Don’t listen to godless and corrupt chatter, gossip or perverse language. Your ears are like your eyes, they are entryways to your soul! Here are a couple of life changing instructions about hearing… Proverbs 20:12 “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.” Proverbs 15:31 “The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

Going deeper with God doesn’t happen automatically. And it will not happen without Desire—like Moses, and Discipline—like Paul who said, in 1 Timothy 4:7 “…train yourself for godliness.”
