Speaking of the Providence of God…

Did you hear this past week that a new letter on God and the Constitution written by George Washington surfaced to be sold after decades in a private collection? The letter from Washington was sent to Richard Peters, the speaker of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and a former member of the Continental Congress. It was dated and signed September 7, 1788. In the letter, Washington praises God for the ratification of the US Constitution, previously written the year before in Philadelphia.

The letter was written a week after Washington had told Alexander Hamilton that he would most likely accept the invitation to become President. His letter arrived at a crucial time when the new US Constitution was under attack by some states who wanted to convene another constitutional convention in order to undermine the one that was the new governmental law.

The letter is currently being offered by the Raab Collection for $140,000. In the letter, Washington states that it was the Divine “Providence” of God that guided the Americans through the Revolution, Victory, and the adoption of the newly adopted Constitution. He prays that the same Providence that brought this nation to life, will continue, in like manner, to sustain them now that the Constitution is under attack. At one point he states… “That Providence which has hitherto smiled on the honest endeavors of the well meaning part of the People of this Country will not, I trust, withdraw its support from them at this crisis.”

Nathan Raab, president of the Raab, Collection said in a statement about the letter, "Washington, who was the General in Chief of the Continental Army during the war and President of the Constitutional Convention, makes a remarkable statement in this powerful letter: his victory in battle and his stewardship over the Convention that led to our Constitution came with the guiding influence of a higher power," Further, the historical organization said, "It is clear that he believed in a Creator God of some manner, and seemingly one that was also active in the universe. This God had three main traits; he was wise, inscrutable, and irresistible. Washington referred to this God by many names, but most often by the name of 'Providence.'"

So much for modern historical revisionists who have, and who continue, to try and rewrite history in a progressive attempt to write God out of America’s founding and away from the belief of our significant forefathers who believed that America had its birth by the divine plan of God--- that it was providential.

Today, we are again in a battle for the Constitution of the United States! If you listen to modern, progressive pundits and much of the academic and cultural elite, you will not get the real story of America, the Constitution and its intention. In fact, you’ll be told that America, in spite of all it has done to protect and provide for much of the rest of the world, is evil and needs to apologize to the world for existing. So, let me recommend a couple of books that tell the real story…        1. The Light and the Glory by Peter Marshall and David Manuel. 2. From Sea to Shining Sea also by Marshall and Manuel. These will give you a fantastic survey of our founding and early history. And by the way, we need to be teaching these things to our kids. These things are not being taught and many, adults included, have no valid historical context, which is essential, to accurately evaluate the worldview they are now being taught.

Lord’s Supper… Be sure and be here tonight at the 6:00 PM service… we will partake of the Lord’s Supper and honor our Savior’s sacrifice for our salvation. It’s the Holy meal that Jesus told us to repeat. I hope to see you here. And remember, God is always trying to take us someplace new. I love being your Pastor!!!

For God’s Glory Alone,

Bro. Ray
