The Eye of the Hurricane

preparing for storms

As I write this column many are preparing for the latest storm… Hurricane Ian threatens the west coast of Florida and may, before it is over (and before you read this column) include the northern panhandle as well. It is never a bad thing to be prepared for storms, especially where we live. But hurricane preparation should remind us of other storms the Bible speaks of that are headed our way, and we must take them as seriously as we do the hurricanes and prepare for them as well. These storms that the scripture tells us about eerily resemble things currently happening in our nation and around the globe. As I thought about these coming storms, I reached up and took off the shelf a book in my library written several years ago by the late Dr. Billy Graham titled, Storm Warning. Interestingly he has an entire section labeled, “The Eye of the Hurricane” in which he speaks of the coming war as described in Revelation 6 with the rider on the “Red Horse”. This is especially worth noting given that in the past week Vladimir Putin has threatened the use of nuclear weapons against the west and Ukraine to salvage what appears to be his failing war effort against Ukraine.

Listen to these words by Dr. Graham… “John tells of the red horse of the Apocalypse—the bringer of war. This second horseman will spark unprecedented violence and storms of destruction until the final hour when the Messiah Himself will intervene… It would be naïve for anyone to ignore the fact that this ominous rider who brings war is, even now, riding relentlessly in our direction… We are all neighbors, especially now that the Cold War is over. The West won the war many contend. But we cannot afford to celebrate prematurely; the post-Cold War stockpiles of nuclear weapons still give mankind the power to destroy the earth seventeen times over in flames reaching 130 million degrees. No United Nations resolution, no peacekeeping force, no new world order can stop it when the appointed time arrives… In these tempestuous times, no one can speak of war with confident detachment.”

Dr. Graham adds, “By nature we all want peace.” Our leaders promise peace, but the best peace has never been more than a restless calm. The world is in such desperate chaos so much of the time, I have to wonder is peace just an illusion. Does the current calm indicate imminent peace or perhaps a storm more dreadful than we could ever imagine? I cannot help but believe that today we are in the Eye of the Hurricane… It is a feeling I cannot deny… Unless we succeed in prevailing upon the mercies of God and gaining His clemency, I fear that the destiny of our civilization is already sealed… Only God can intervene on our behalf. We must pray for peace because prayer is the most powerful weapon we have in our spiritual arsenal to bring an end to the threat of worldwide disaster and to bring about God’s plans for His creation.”

storm warnings

The “Weather Channel” spent days warning those in the path of the storm to make early and advanced preparations for the coming storm. Fortunately, most people take those warnings very seriously and most survive.

Likewise, if you know your Bible, you cannot help but believe that we are seeing the birth pains of Matthew 24 increasing in scope and frequency. Jesus warned His disciples-- “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.” (Matthew 24:6–11)

A “storm” is coming. That is a biblical fact, and Jesus has warned us. Have you made preparations? “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

And remember, God is always trying to take you someplace new. I love being your Pastor!
