“Oh the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.” Psalm 1:1
Unfortunately, in a world that is hostile to Jesus, his followers are often going to be mocked. Peter talks about this in 2 Peter 3:3 when he says, “Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.”
Jesus also speaks of this in the sermon on the mount: “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.” (Matthew 5:11).
If you want to stand firm in your faith in the midst of this and be the blessed person described in Psalm 1, you’re going to need to put on the armor of God. Take some time to read Ephesians 6:10-18 today.
As you read, prayerfully imagine yourself putting on each piece of the armor.
The belt of truth anchors you in honesty and integrity, preventing you from compromising your holiness. The breastplate of righteousness shields your heart from temptation and deceit. The shield of faith protects you from the fiery darts of the devil, maintaining your conviction in the promises of God. The shoes of peace let you go in the peace that comes from the good news of the gospel. Lastly, put on the helmet of salvation and carry the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, equipping you to counter lies with truth.
If you do this and meditate on God’s word as you go about your day, the Lord will strengthen your resolve and enable you to stand firm even when you’re being ridiculed or mocked for his sake.
