What Are You Planting? | Galatians 6:9-10
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” Galatians 6:9-10
This passage from Paul continues to echo the themes we’ve been talking about from Psalm 1, particularly in terms of bearing seasonal fruit.
Have you given much thought to that? Don’t allow this to be a cliche or another spiritual insight you allow in one ear and out the other. If God’s word is true, and we know it is, this means that even in what you perceive to be bad or unfortunate seasons, there is still good fruit to bear. God is always at work beneath the surface when you are tapped into him, nourishing and preparing you for more fruit.
In Galatians 6:7-8, Paul even says it this way: “Don’t be misled…you will harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.”
If you want to be the righteous man or woman like a tree planted by streams of water, if you want to produce the good fruit God has designed you for in each season, it’s crucial that you know what you’re sowing.
Are you sowing into your sinful nature or are you sowing into the Spirit? Remember, even if you are sowing into the Spirit, there will be cycles of plenty and cycles of dryness.
Paul is telling you that it’s a mark of spiritual maturity to understand and accept these spiritual cycles and persevere in doing good anyway.
