What Are You Building On?
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on a solid rock… it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”
Matthew 7:24-25
No structure can last without a strong foundation. Take a few examples from modern architecture and nature itself.
The leaning tower of Pisa is a testament to an inadequate foundation. Its structural beauty is ultimately overshadowed by its pronounced lean due to shifting soil.
Modern skyscrapers are able to boast often unimaginable heights because they are supported by foundations that plunge deep into the earth. These foundations are designed to allow the building to hold up under the influence of natural forces.
Trees with deep root systems withstand severe weather events much better than trees with shallow root systems or no root system at all. Even a tree that looks big and strong outwardly can be uprooted and destroyed by a tornado if there’s nothing underneath.
God uses examples like this from the physical world to demonstrate an important truth about the spiritual world: before we see any visible evidence of faith, a deeply rooted spiritual foundation needs to be laid.
This parable of Jesus from Matthew 7 is a lesson for you today. The foundation you choose to build your life on is going to impact your destiny as well as your stability when life gets tough.
Take a moment to reflect on your foundation. Are you building your house on the rock that is Jesus Christ and his teaching, or are you building your house on the wisdom of the world?
If you want a faith that won’t fail, it’s crucial for you to answer this question.
