Is That Really In Your Control? | Psalm 131:1

“Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.” Psalm 131:1

Have you given much thought to what might be causing your heart to be unsettled?

Think about the inner life of your soul. Whether it’s issues related to your work, your finances, your children, or your relationships, is your soul unsettled because you’re holding on too tightly to control and you’re afraid to let go and let God be God?

From time to time, perhaps you even find yourself looking down on others. Either way, the words of Psalm 131:1 provide you with a depiction of a soul that is the opposite of unsettled; it is calmed and quieted, surrendered of pride and lofty ambition.

David charges you here to make an honest examination of how your pride is affecting your soul and therefore your relationship with others. How often do you worry yourself sick about things you already know you can’t actually change instead of handing them over to the Lord?

When you choose not to concern yourself with things you know are out of your control, matters too great or too awesome for you to grasp, you are choosing to embrace your own limitations. Although it definitely cuts against the world’s advice to do more, think more, and have an opinion about more, this is a good thing!

Today, let me encourage you to examine your heart. Take some time to prayerfully surrender your plans, your worries, and your anxieties to God. Ask Him to replace your pride with his presence and his peace. He’ll honor your prayer of surrender and you’ll be glad you did it.
