Toe Licking For Charity

You can’t make this stuff up! Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma has apologized for hosting a “toe-licking” fund raiser challenge among its students. This outrageous event, held on February 29th, was captured on video, and quickly went viral. Calling the ticketed fund raiser the “Clash of the Classes” students from ninth to twelfth grade are seen licking other students’ bare feet in a competition held in the school gymnasium while an announcer urges them on.

The public outrage began pouring in once the video became viral. In fact, because the video gained national and international attention the Deer Creek School District released a statement admitting that “through this specific game we failed to uphold the dignity of our students and the proud image of our community…In regard to this one particular activity, we fell short and for that we greatly apologize.” The statement went on to say, “We are taking steps to ensure that this is not repeated, and that all fundraising activities are carried out with the pride and respect worthy of our students, staff and community.”

No joke! How noble of them to recognize the insanity of allowing such an event to have ever happened in the first place—and then after the fact and after the severe public outcry! The statement noted that every student that participated signed up ahead of time…so that makes it okay?  No faculty or staff participated… so that makes it okay? And the statement boasted that the week raised $152,830 for charity…so that makes it okay? In what universe does someone, a principle, a teacher, or an administrator not step up and say… “this is insane, not funny, and unacceptable no matter how much money it raises?” Mind you, while not physically participating, the faculty and administration were not innocent bystanders who were taken by surprise. They allowed the event and were present at the event—they didn’t simply release the students into the gym and say, “have it.” This is so disgusting, not to mention humiliating, that I am surprised that even the “woke” culture is not screaming about it. This is close to child abuse and exploitation.

The event raised money for “Not Your Average Joe Coffee”, which employs people with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. While that is certainly a worthy cause, it seems like the people with the greater intellectual challenges don’t work at Joe’s Coffee but rather at Deer Creek High School—maybe they should keep the money for themselves!

John Heywood is attributed as saying, “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” I have a book in my library titled, The Death of Common Sense. Rush Limbaugh used to say that in this culture, common sense has become a super-power. How true. So, how did we get here? Paul helps us understand how people at the end of the age will lose their minds and the capacity to distinguish truth from lies. Writing in 2 Thessalonians 2:7,10,11 he says, “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work…and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false.” Are we there? I think so.

Our Easter celebration is just a few weeks away…
And with it several special events. On Palm Sunday the 24th our sanctuary choir and orchestra will present a powerful music celebration titled, “Finished.” On Good Friday the 29, we’ll host our two annual luncheons one at 10:30 and the other at noon. And Good Friday evening at 6:30 we’ll celebrate with a contemporary night of worship. And of course, our grand Easter Sunday morning services to celebrate the resurrection! It’s going to be a great close to the month of March and I hope you will take it all in as we exalt our risen Savior. And remember, God is always trying to take us someplace new. I love being your Pastor!

For God’s Glory Alone,
Pastor Ray
