Your Mind Matters

In Philippians 4:8, the Bible says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” That verse is a reminder that the information, ideas, conversations, and habits we repeatedly think on shape the perspective of our minds! As an old commercial used to say, “the mind is a terrible thing to waste!”

Your brain is an incredible thing. Researchers give us some amazing facts; here are just a few:

The Brain is constantly changing.
Through a process called neuroplasticity, the brain can strengthen, weaken, and reorganize connections as we learn and practice. Repeated thought and behavior can reinforce mental habits.

Your brain remains active while you sleep.
Sleep supports memory consolidation, learning, emotional regulation, and other                 essential functions. Rest is not wasted time.

Your brain uses about 20% of your body's resting energy.
Although the brain accounts for only about 2% of adult body weight, it consumes a         substantial share of the body's energy.

The brain has a negativity bias.
Negative experiences can command more attention than equally strong positive              experiences. This helps explain why one harsh criticism can overshadow many              compliments.

Attention is limited.
You cannot give full attention to everything around you at once. What you focus on          influences what you notice and how you interpret events.

The mind can dwell on imagined threats.
Humans can mentally rehearse events that have not happened, sometimes experiencing real anxiety about possibilities rather than present realities.

Mental shortcuts can produce errors.
Our brains use shortcuts to make decisions efficiently, but these shortcuts can lead to     biases and mistaken assumptions.

Beliefs can influence behavior.
What we believe about ourselves, other people, and the future can shape our choices, persistence, and reactions.

A thought can feel true without being true.
The mind can be lead astray, and the intensity of a feeling is not proof that the conclusion behind the feeling is accurate.

Those are just a few facts about your mind, but these facts serve to teach us that what we do with our mind really does matter. That’s why Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” While the mind can be corrupted, the good news is that it can also be renewed… Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Renewal isn’t a “one and done” event but a daily routine of shaping and reshaping our minds with the truth of God’s Word.

And remember, God is always trying to take you someplace new. I love being your Pastor!

For God’s Glory Alone,

Pastor Ray
